SHAKOTAN PEAK
The principle mountain of Shakotan Peninsula. Discover the walking trails, go mountain climbing. There are over 8 kilometers of trails to explore. In season you will see the edible wild plants and fruits, the abundance of wildflowers, native birds and animals. The forest on the lower slopes is of mixed conifer and broad leaf species, giving way to creeping pine forests and alpine plants in the upper regions. From easy walking trails to tougher experiences on the mountain, there is something for you. There are information boards to guide you from National Road Route 229.
The walking trail is steep as you enter the forest in the highland areas, but don`t be put off, once you reach an altitude of around 900 meters the trails become much easier and the views magnificent.

The waters of the Sea of Japan are crystal clear, especially throughout the months of summer, permitting magnificent viewing of the underwater reefs. The surrounding ocean is super rich in nutrients promoting a plethora of marine growth, the proclamation of the Marine Park protects valuable fish breeding grounds (from commercial fishing) and many species may be seen in abundance from the convenience of the glass bottom boat tours.
