Highlights of Ougon Misaki

BIKUNI HARBOUR
One of several highlights of the village that cannot be missed. Here fishermen for over two hundred years have landed their catches of shellfish, squid, abalone, salmon, sea urchin, herring and cod. During traditional holidays the shore is crowded with local amateur fishermen trying their luck.
Take your rod and try your luck in the rich waters surrounding the harbor, hire a fishing boat or take a trip in the glass bottomed boat to view the spectacular marine environment of the peninsula.
OUGON MISAKI POINT
A visit to Shakotan is not complete without enjoying the panoramic views from the observatory tower on Ougon Misaki Point.
Take the signposted 410 meter walking trail from Bikuni Harbour and enjoy the extensive views of the rocky coastline and vistas of the sparkling and crystal clear Sea of Japan. We apologise if some of these walking trails may not be suitable for the infirm.
TAKARA JIMA (ISLAND)
It is said that the island of Takara Jima was named after the large shoals of herring that flourished in the Sea of Japan prior to Japanese settlement. The small nearby island is Gome Island, so named because of its resemblance to a sitting Gome seagull.
BIKUNI SHRINE
First constructed in the town of Kodomari in 1726, the shrine was moved to its present location in 1914, it is a valuable historical asset, its period construction and woodcarvings reflecting its ongoing importance to Japanese cultural heritage.


Highlights of Shakotan Misaki

FISHING HARBOURS
There are four natural fishing harbours in the area. They have been in continuous use both before and since the days of Japanese settlement when the principal fishing harvest was herring. Today the natural harbours are popular amongst amateur fishermen and sports divers.
SHIMAMUI COAST
The Shimamui coastline is listed among the top 100 beauty spots of Japan`s coast, throughout the summer months the natural underwater reefs may be clearly seen in the crystal clear waters. At the cove of Byoubu Rock, waves rolling in from the Sea of Japan create a magical splendor. The local Ezokanzou (Lily) flower decorates the cliffs in early summer.
SHIMAMUI COAST TUNNEL
Walk through the 2 meter wide tunnel to access the viewing point of the Shimamui coastline. Once through the tunnel the brilliant splendor of the crystal clear ``Shakotan Blue`` phenomena appears before you.


Highlights of Kamui Misaki

FISHING HARBOUR
No visit is complete without a stop at the fishing harbours of Yobetsu and Kouzaki. See the many different designs of fishing boats that ply the Sea of Japan, the breakwaters that protect the fleet from the ravages of the storms. If your timing is right, you may experience the unloading of the catches and see the hardworking fishermen enjoying the bounty of their labour.
KAMUI MISAKI POINT
Take the 770 meter walking path from the parking lot to the top of Kamui Misaki Point. Follow the route marked ``Charenka`s Lane`` and you will experience a panoramic view of the magnificent Sea of Japan, the 20 minute walk to the lookout will reward you with a spectacular 300 degree vista of sea and rugged coastline. If you are fortunate enough to visit in early summer you will be treated to the sight of the beautiful native Ezokanzou (Lily) flower in full bloom.

KAMUI ROCK
Kamui Rock, which may be viewed from the lookout on Kamui Misaki Point, is said to be the reincarnation of a virgin, standing a lonely vigil in the middle of the tempestuous sea. Kamui Rock, along with the Subais Rocks, stand as silent sentinels, whose duty it is to enhance the beauty of the view from Kamui Misaki Point.
