BIKUNI HARBOUR
One of several highlights of the village that cannot be missed. Here fishermen for over two hundred years have landed their catches of shellfish, squid, abalone, salmon, sea urchin, herring and cod. During traditional holidays the shore is crowded with local amateur fishermen trying their luck.
Take your rod and try your luck in the rich waters surrounding the harbor, hire a fishing boat or take a trip in the glass bottomed boat to view the spectacular marine environment of the peninsula.
OUGON MISAKI POINT
A visit to Shakotan is not complete without enjoying the panoramic views from the observatory tower on Ougon Misaki Point.
Take the signposted 410 meter walking trail from Bikuni Harbour and enjoy the extensive views of the rocky coastline and vistas of the sparkling and crystal clear Sea of Japan. We apologise if some of these walking trails may not be suitable for the infirm.
TAKARA JIMA (ISLAND)
It is said that the island of Takara Jima was named after the large shoals of herring that flourished in the Sea of Japan prior to Japanese settlement. The small nearby island is Gome Island, so named because of its resemblance to a sitting Gome seagull.
BIKUNI SHRINE
First constructed in the town of Kodomari in 1726, the shrine was moved to its present location in 1914, it is a valuable historical asset, its period construction and woodcarvings reflecting its ongoing importance to Japanese cultural heritage.
