The arrival of spring in Shakotan is marked by the melting of the snow. It is a time for celebrating the renewal of life, for the witnessing the blooming sakura (cherry blossom) in hanami (picnic) gatherings and the traditional harvesting of fresh edible wild plants such as Gyoujya Garlic, Taranome and Udo. The forests are shaking off their winter doldrums and coating themselves in rich shades of green, spring flowers are displaying their colours [See the Hokkaido flower calendar at www.hanatairiku.jp/english/calendar] and the kuma (native bear) are venturing from their long winter hibernation.



Warm breezes blowing northward from the Pacific herald the arrival of summer. This is the time to enjoy the splendor of the sea, with swimming, diving and marine sports available for the active minded. Explore the beauties of the Marine Park in a glass bottom boat or try the excellent fishing and diving. Go bush walking, climb the spectacular Mount Shakotan to witness panoramic views of the peninsula. If you are fortunate you may even see the native Ezo Deer or Hokkaido Squirrel in their natural environment.

Autumn in Shakotan is a period of change, with the forests a kaleidoscope of colour. It is the traditional period for the gathering of mountain wild grapes and mushrooms. Local farmers are busy harvesting their crops of vegetables for market. The last Sunday in September celebrates the `Shakotan IKI IKI Festival` where fresh seasonable and inexpensive locally produced food products are available (see festival details). As winter approaches it is time to sample the seasonal specialty of salmon hotpot, ideally suited to rejuvenate the body after a long day of enjoying the splendors of Shakotan.



The image of Hokkaido`s winters is one of extreme cold. However Shakotan`s proximity to the sea has a moderating influence. The sight of white snow blanketing the shore to the edge of the breaking waves is something that cannot be missed. Experience the uniqueness of the area, overnight in Shakotan on the way to your favourite ski resort, take a snow walk and visit the seals and sea lions. During the 4 week period from mid November through mid December, local hotels, restaurants and lodges prepare their own original hotpot recipes and welcome guests with many special events.
